There’s nothing better than some carefully selected designer rugs to make a house feel like a home. Rugs are the perfect way to soften the appearance of timber floors, protect high traffic areas, improve acoustics, and to add a pop of colour or pattern to any room.
People have been using rugs to make their homes more comfortable for hundreds of years. Interestingly, the basic manufacturing technology has changed very little over time and there are still three common ways of making contemporary rugs.
Probably the oldest and most traditional form of rug making, woven rugs can be hand or machine made on a loom in a variety of fibres such as wool, cotton, jute or synthetic yarn. Woven rugs are diverse, ranging from simple cotton flat weaves to intricate patterns, inspired by designs handed down through the generations with origins from the nomadic tribal people in Central Asia.
The most common method of manufacturing domestic carpets and modern rugs, tufted rugs are made by inserting the pile into a backing material, which is then bonded to a secondary backing made of a woven hessian weave or synthetic alternative to provide stability. The pile can be trimmed or sculpted to achieve different textures.
Catering for the high end of the designer rug market, hand knotted rugs are what the name suggests, a technique where strands of yarn are hand knotted into the backing to create the pile of the rug. Usually made in silk or fine wool, hand knotted rugs are often called Oriental Rugs.
